If crystal clear water, waterfalls and jumping into absolutely freezing mountain pools sounds like your idea of a good day out, you'll want to add this one to your Lake District list.
Hidden amongst the ridiculously good scenery around Buttermere Lake, you'll find a series of natural pools and waterfalls often referred to as the Buttermere Fairy Pools.
If you're looking for hidden gems in the Lake District, wild swimming near Buttermere or just somewhere a little different to explore on your next trip to the Lakes, here's what you need to know.
So, Where Are the Buttermere Fairy Pools?
First things first: don't expect to type “Fairy Pools” into Google Maps and be delivered directly to a lovely little sign saying YOU'RE HERE.
That would be far too easy.
The pools are tucked away amongst the streams and waterfalls in the Buttermere Valley, surrounded by some of the best mountain scenery the Lake District has to offer.
There isn't really one single “Fairy Pool” either. As you explore the water, you'll find a series of rocky pools and little waterfalls.
How to Get to the Fairy Pools Near Buttermere
Your best bet is to start around Buttermere and head out on foot.
If you're driving, park in an appropriate public car park around Buttermere and get those walking shoes on. We parked at Gatesgarth Car Park — there's plenty of space, plus an overflow car park if it's busy.
From there, head past the café shack and make your way up towards Honister Pass. You'll eventually spot a trail leading off the road, follow it all the way around and you'll soon see the little waterfalls in the distance. People do use the pools for wild swimming in the Lake District, but we're going to warn you now. IT. IS. COLD.
Natural water also comes with natural risks. Conditions can change quickly, particularly after rainfall, and rocks can be incredibly slippery. Water depth, currents and temperature aren't guaranteed just because someone else jumped in on TikTok.
If you're not confident in the conditions, admire it from the side.
Still absolutely stunning. Significantly less shrieking.
Make a Proper Day of Buttermere
Don't just find the pools and head straight home.
You're already in Buttermere, which is easily one of our favourite places for a Lake District day out.
You can explore the area around Buttermere Lake, grab some food, find somewhere to sit with a view or take on the popular Buttermere circular walk.
What Should You Take?
This is the Lakes, so even if the weather app is showing a massive yellow sun, we'd still bring a waterproof.
Decent walking shoes are also a must because wet rocks and slippery surfaces are everywhere.
If you're planning on getting in the water, pack a towel, warm clothes for afterwards and something refreshing for when you're done.
May we suggest a cold can of Hip Pop?
Obviously we may.
One Last Thing…
Places like this are special because they still feel a little wild.
So enjoy them, take approximately 700 photos, have your freezing cold dip if conditions are safe... and then leave the place exactly as you found it.
