Pumpkin Spice Lattes (PSL) have been fuelling autumn vibes for over 20 years. Starbucks first launched its now-signature PSL in 2003 - and other coffee chains everywhere have been riding the pumpkin-spice wave ever since.
But before you grab your next cup of cinnamon-y comfort, there’s something you should know…
PSL: Drink…or dessert?
We’ve crunched the numbers on Pumpkin Spice drinks across the UK, and the results are spicy.
The average PSL contains 31.9g of sugar per serving. That’s 107% of the NHS’s recommended daily sugar intake in just one drink.
Here’s how the big names stack up:
-
Starbucks: 42g of sugar - 140% of your daily intake
-
Black Sheep Coffee: 38g of sugar, equal to 127% of your intake and about the same as 1.5 of their blueberry muffins
-
Tim Hortons: 32g of sugar, the equivalent of 3 chocolate Timbits
-
Pret a Manger: 24.6g of sugar, containing more than their chocolate mousse dessert pot
-
Greggs: 25g of sugar, on par with 1.5 caramel custard donuts
This begs the question…is a PSL really a drink, or just a decadent dessert in disguise?
